SALEM - A man charged with attempting to rob an antiques dealer, only to have a coffee mug slammed into his face, had been paroled just days before the holdup, his lawyer said, and had been drinking heavily.

Steven Donarumo, 27, was ordered held without bail yesterday after a hearing in Salem District Court, where a judge heard testimony from the antiques dealer and a police officer who responded to the 911 call. Read this article in full with a

Ruling: city must pay cop

The city must pay a retired police captain more than $17,000 in benefits for time he did not work following his retirement because those payments have been "past practice" in the Salem Police Department for more than 25 years, an arbitrator ruled.

Salem State lands Valentine, Cooper for Speaker Series

The university announced yesterday it has signed new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine for its 2012 Speaker Series.
