Woman accused of punching her children

LAWRENCE - Police arrested a Methuen woman for punching her 12-year-old daughter several times in the face while they were inside a Laundromat on Broadway.

Police were called to the facility Sunday afternoon by another woman who told police "no child deserved to be beaten like that," the police report said. Read this article in full with a

Topsfield police investigate break-in

TOPSFIELD — State police dogs and a helicopter from the Air Wing were enlisted in an unsuccessful effort to capture the brazen robber or robbers who broke into a Hill Street home while the resident was busy upstairs.

Salem High tightens sports policy

SALEM — The academic bar is being raised at Salem High.
Students who play a sport or take part in an extracurricular activity, like band or drama, can fail only one course in a quarter and still be eligible, according to a policy approved this week by the School Committee.

BEVERLY — As a young girl, Martha Gavin was intrigued by the paintings of churches that hung over the mantle at her uncle's house in New Jersey.
She wondered why the pictures always depicted "broken" churches that had been damaged, as if hit by a bomb.
