Heavy equipment stolen in Peabody

PEABODY — Thieves rammed a stolen Ford dump truck through a locked gate, ransacked the interior of the truck and stole the $5,000 stainless steel sander off the back of the vehicle Wednesday night. The truck was recovered hours later, battered from its run-in with the gate at 515 Lowell St., the site where owner Charles Antonio of Charles Antonio Landscaping stores his equipment.

Antonio said the door of his Bobcat was also stolen that same evening, and he has seen surveillance footage of the thieves ramming the chained gate. He doesn't know how they were able to start the truck. Antonio said police have not looked at the tape.

"It's a shame people buy this stuff hot," Antonio said. "If there was no market, then people wouldn't steal."
