PEABODY — Frank Varinos wants to give people something to smile about.
The Peabody dentist will open his doors all day Friday to offer free dental care in a program dubbed "Dentistry With a Heart." Varinos and about 24 other dental volunteers will treat needy patients who wouldn't otherwise have access to basic oral care.
"He felt this was a way he could give back to the community in which his business has prospered over the years," said Tina Varinos, his wife and the dental office's marketing manager.
It's a first at Varinos' 10-year-old dental practice, his wife said. Frank Varinos read about similar programs in trade publications and wanted to start Dentistry with a Heart at his Route 1 offices.
The dentist will be joined by one of his office associates, three oral surgeons from Salem Peabody Oral Surgery, an orthodontist, three hygienists and about 15 support staff.
Tina Varinos said most people have access to health care, but dental insurance isn't always a given.
"(They) don't have any kind of coverage," she said. "So it gets to be a big expense."
Tina Varinos and other organizers aren't sure how many people will come out. They are trying to plan for a large crowd by letting office park employees park at a nearby business.
She has been contacting local social service agencies to get word out about Friday's event.
"We're hoping for a busy day," Tina Varinos said.
She estimates about 500 people will come for the dental work. Services will be offered first-come, first-served and provide basic care like cleanings, fillings and extractions, she said.
"Hopefully, word has gotten out, and we have a busy productive day," Tina Varinos said.
