BEVERLY — Beverly Main Streets is offering new incentives for downtown businesses to spruce up their storefronts.

The nonprofit organization will provide matching grants of up to $5,000 and low-interest loans of up to $40,000 to business and property owners who want to improve their facades. Main Streets will also provide free design assistance.

A free workshop is scheduled for Monday, March 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Beverly Public Library. Representatives from Main Streets' design committee and the city Planning Department will explain the application and grant process and offer advice on design techniques.

Mulch fire closes Peabody highways

Firefighters are battling a two-alarm mulch fire off of Farm Avenue in Peabody, the smoke from which has forced the closure of several ramps near the busy area where I-95, I-128 and Route 1 intersect.

Crash victim identified as Peabody man

State Police have identified the victim of last night’s car crash on Route 128 in Danvers as Reginaldo Dasilva Souza, a 30-year-old Peabody resident.

Cupcakes and girl power

PEABODY — She's known from coast to coast as the cupcake lady, but Rebecca Hains of Peabody isn't all sweetness. And she's much more than someone caught up in a government snafu.
Otherwise, you probably wouldn't have heard from her when airport security officers seized her cupcake prior to a Dec. 21 flight from Las Vegas. The guardians of the air suspected all was not kosher with its "gel-like" vanilla-bourbon icing.

Director hired for regional 911 center

MIDDLETON — The regional 911 dispatch center under construction on the grounds of Middleton Jail now has a boss.
Thomas Dubas, a former detective and police chief and the current head of a regional dispatch center in Pennsylvania, has been hired as director of the Essex County Regional Emergency Communications Center.
