State police quickly clear SUV rollover

DANVERS — State police responded to a sport utility vehicle rollover on Interstate 95 south at the Centre Street exit around 7:15 p.m. The driver, who told police he had injured his hand, was later taken to Beverly Hospital.

Thomas Lewandowski, 22, of East Boston was the lone occupant in the silver GMC SUV, which rolled over and landed on its wheels. The driver told state police his tire blew out as he took Exit 48, which leads to Centre Street. The exit is bounded to the south by Route 114 and to the north by Route 62, where Massachusetts State Police Troop A headquarters is located.

Beverly Hospital said last night that Lewandowski was in the emergency room and no patient information was available on him.

At 7:30 p.m., the SUV had been loaded on a flatbed wrecker and could be seen from the highway. It had a cracked windshield and some front-end damage.

Police had blocked off the exit with flares but cleared the scene shortly thereafter. Traffic was light, and police took about 15 minutes to clear the accident.
