Marblehead Rec Department offers new science classes

MARBLEHEAD — Kids will literally take something away from the new science programs being offered through the Recreation Department this spring.

Discovery Electricity and Early Inventions are the two latest programs put on by KnowAtom North Shore.

KnowAtom Director Francis Vigeant said the 5-year-old company works with schools and after-school programs all over Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The program's instructors teach hands-on, project-based courses, and in every class kids create an experiment relative to the day's lesson.

According to Marblehead Recreation Director Mike Lane, this is the third year Marblehead Rec has offered programs through KnowAtom. In other programs, KnowAtom instructors have helped kids build simple machines using LEGOs, make rockets out of pressurized water and shoot a solid-fuel rocket 1,200 feet into the air.

In Discovery Electricity, first-, second- and third-graders will learn all about the current information surrounding electricity. Over the 10-week course, kids will make a variety of projects including batteries charged from fruit, a compass and even a solar-powered race car.

Early Inventions will take kids in grades four through six on a historic journey by recreating a number of early inventions including cannons, catapults, solar water heaters and hydraulic cranes.

Lane said he keeps bringing KnowAtom back because the kids keep signing up.

"The kids are engaged the whole time," Lane said, "and they are excited to go home with an experiment after every class."

The fun doesn't end with the spring courses. KnowAtom will be back this summer to offer the popular rocketry and simple machines classes as well as a new course that teaches kids how to solder electronic circuit boards.
