SALEM — A busy afternoon for firefighters was capped off yesterday with a chimney fire at the home of a prominent former politician.
While Salem firefighters were at the scene of a house fire on Mason Street, they received a call at about 5:20 p.m. for a chimney fire at 21 Fairview Road near Salem State College.
There was fire shooting out of the chimney when firefighters from Beverly, Peabody and Lynn arrived on scene. Firefighters from the neighboring cities were covering the stations while crews from Salem were on Mason Street. A crew from the Mason Street fire was freed up to respond to Fairview Road.
Firefighters also battled two small fires inside a boiler at the Salem Harbor Station on Fort Avenue at noon.
Salem fire Deputy Chief Brian Harrington said there was no structural damage to the Fairview Road home, but there will be significant cleanup needed inside.
The home is owned by former state Senate President Kevin Harrington and his wife, Kathleen, who are the parents of former Salem mayor Neil Harrington.
The deputy chief and the homeowners are not related.
