Peabody schools' last day pegged for June 16

PEABODY — June 16 is the day famed Apache leader Geronimo was born. Despite the historical significance, students will more likely mark it on their calendars as the last day of school.

Superintendent C. Milton Burnett announced the last day of school at Tuesday night's School Committee meeting. Unless he has to cancel a school day before then, the last day will be June 16, Burnett told committee members.

While snow's unlikely now, floodwater has been known to lap at the city's doorstep in May, Mayor Michael Bonfanti said.

Students may well do their own version of an anti-rain dance to keep the waters at bay and enter summer vacation sooner than later.
