Cops bust suspected rogue black-toppers

By Bruno Matarazzo Jr.

WENHAM — Three people who police say were looking for driveway-paving work without a permit were arrested on Wednesday just as a Main Street resident was about to hire the trio.

Patrolman David Marsh, who was finishing up a detail on Route 97, spotted a vehicle at 11:40 a.m. that matched a description of one police were looking for. Police said several residents complained about three males "who were going door to door."

The vehicle went into a driveway on Main Street and Marsh later stopped the three for questioning. After a brief investigation, the three were arrested and charged with soliciting without a permit and marijuana possession.

Police said the homeowner was moments away from paying the men to pave the driveway.

James Stanley, 50, of 8 First St., Ipswich; Kenneth Paterson, 20, of Hampton, N.H.; and a 16-year-old boy from North Attleboro were arraigned yesterday at Ipswich District Court in Newburyport. They were released on their personal recognizance.

Paterson and the juvenile received additional charges of misleading, obstructing or impeding a police officer during an investigation after police said they gave Marsh false information to identify themselves to avoid arrest.
