PEABODY — The library's summer reading program is going out in freestyle.
For the summer reading finale, children's librarian Carol Bender has arranged for Freestyle Frisbee champ Todd Brodeur to perform Aug. 27 at Emerson Park from 2 to 4 p.m.
Brodeur will perform and teach Frisbee tricks outdoors. If it rains, the event will be moved to Higgins Middle School gym.
"I think it's just going to be really fun," she said.
Bender also thought the event would be a nice treat for children who had collectively read 110,000 pages since school let out.
"The kids have been reading a lot this summer," she said.
When she proposed the event, Library Director Martha Holden suggested bringing in the Peabody police for the event. The Police Department responded by offering 200 flying discs to children who attend.
"It's been a positive collaboration," Bender said.
The discs also fit into the citywide push for greater physical activity among children, the children's librarian noted.
Officers are also organizing a game of Frisbee golf after the program.
