IPSWICH — Residents living near the Great Marsh can expect to see helicopters overhead for the next week, beginning tomorrow.
The Northeast Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District has scheduled aerial application of a larvicide that helps control the mosquito population in the marsh.
The material, bacillus thuringensis, is reported by the district to be a natural bacterium found in soil and water and nontoxic to people, fish, birds, bees and almost all insects.
Spraying will be done during daylight hours only.
The marshes are normally sprayed three to six times a year to control salt marsh mosquitoes.
The marshes in neighboring Rowley, Newbury, Newburyport and Salisbury will also be treated.
