No one hurt in blaze in basement of 3-decker

PEABODY — A basement fire in a three-family home on Warren Street yesterday remains under investigation.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the home at 2:45 p.m. after a second-floor resident reported smelling smoke, according to Deputy Chief Paul Hinchion.

Upon arrival at 20 Warren St., smoke could be seen pouring out of the first floor and basement windows.

Acting fire Lt. Tom Wynne and his crew went into basement, which was filled with thick black smoke, and quickly knocked down the blaze, the deputy chief said.

Firefighters had to check all three floors because of the home's balloon construction, which means there's no fire stops in the walls.

The area where the fire started was near the electrical room in the basement. Firefighters would not say if the fire was suspicious.

Fire investigators from the Peabody Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office. Peabody police detectives were also on scene.

The residents didn't stay in the home last night since gas and electrical services were shut off, fire Lt. George Couris said.

Christopher Tighe, director of the city's emergency services, said Homewood Suites Hotel put up the residents for the night.
