Golf club to open Italian restaurant

BEVERLY — The Beverly Golf & Tennis Club plans to open a new restaurant inside its historic clubhouse next month.

The restaurant, to be called Café Diciannove, will serve Italian food and will be open six or seven days a week year-round, said Jane Ash, the club's general manager.

The restaurant is the latest move by the club's new management company to attract customers other than golfers and tennis players to the city-owned club on McKay Street. In addition to an 18-hole golf course, the club has 10 clay tennis courts, three function rooms and a pub.

The club once had a thriving restaurant, but it has not operated for years.

"We want to let people know we're here," Ash said. "One of the challenges is making people understand we're open to the public. It has that country club look to it, and I think people can be intimidated by it."

Bass River Golf Management, which runs the club under a contract with the city, has hired a cook, Joe Dias, with 20 years of experience in restaurants in the North End in Boston, Ash said. Dinners will cost from $10.95 to about $16.95.

The restaurant will be in the Winslow Room and will have 10 to 12 tables. The restaurant menu will also be available in the 19th Hole pub. The clubhouse was built in 1910 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
