Police: Woman snuck pot into court

SALEM — A Lynn woman has been charged with smuggling two bags of marijuana into Salem Superior Court, hiding the drug in a pair of sneakers to give to a Middleton Jail inmate making a court appearance last month.

Jamie Beaton, 23, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute as a result of the Aug. 13 incident. Also charged was Julio Sanchez, 30, of Lynn, the inmate who received the alleged cannabis-laden sneakers. He's facing a charge of marijuana possession, as well.

Salem police were called to the courthouse after a report of a fight in the lockup area, according to a police report. That fight, police say, was touched off when other inmates noticed that Sanchez had two bags of marijuana.

The marijuana had been hidden inside the sneakers that Beaton allegedly brought into the courthouse, police said. A court officer had noticed Beaton handing a bag to Sanchez as he was being led into the lockup, according to the police report.

One court officer was cut as he attempted to break up the fight.

The marijuana was hidden inside the soles of the sneakers and did not show up on an X-ray when they were brought into the building.

Beaton, who was arrested on a warrant and arraigned on Aug. 26, has pleaded not guilty and is free on $5,000 cash bail pending her next court appearance on Oct. 16.
