New business gets permit to locate in Industrial Park

PEABODY — A German shipping company plans to build its East Coast headquarters in the Centennial Business Park.

Schenker Inc. last week received a special permit from the City Council that will allow it to build a 44,500-square-foot warehouse and regional office headquarters in the industrial park off Route 128. The building, near 300 Jubilee Drive, will sit on land owned by Boston Acoustics, a neighboring business.

"The site is immediately adjacent to the highway and further screened by proposed vegetation and surrounding businesses, (and) therefore impacts from the actual site will be minimal," Assistant Director of Planning Blair Haney said in a memorandum to councilors.

According to the terms of the permit, Schenker can operate 24 hours a day, but a company representative at Thursday's council meeting said the bulk of activity will take place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

To help alleviate any possible headaches for nearby homeowners, the permit includes a condition that prohibits any truck connected to the company from traversing Lynnfield Street. The company also promised to adhere to the city's strict blasting protocols should any ledge need to be removed during construction.

A lawyer for abutter A&A Industries, a precision machine manufacturer and fabricator, said that his client was concerned about the potential impact construction would have on its expensive equipment.

Schenker will rely on 18 box trucks and four tractor-trailers. It will warehouse and ship materials for "major medical companies." The company will add at least 70 jobs to the area, Haney said in his memo.

The council voted 9-0 in favor of the permit.
