MIDDLETON — A trail of stolen goods netted four arrests Wednesday morning at the Candlelite Motor Inn on Route 114.
The arrests followed after a motel employee's 5 a.m. call to police about an attempted break-in at the Banana Cabana, a bar on the motel property.
Police Sgt. Ronald Carpenter and Patrolman Thomas McParland responded and came across one of the motel guests, Jason Gainley, 38, of Waltham, according to police Sgt. Gayle Haley.
Haley said police found stolen property on Gainley, a discovery that brought them to 14 N. Main St., an office building that houses the offices of the Essex County Correctional Officers Association and Prestigious Insurance.
Police arrested Gainley on charges of receiving stolen property.
Police also found a wallet belonging to an insurance company employee. Police contacted the employee at home and told her of the discovery.
When police and the employee went to the office building, the door inside was locked, but the businesses inside were broken into and ransacked. Several items were stolen from the two offices. A third office was broken into, but the office was vacant, Haley said.
Haley said the door to the building was also forced open but locked automatically when Gainley left.
Police returned to the motel to speak with the three people staying with Gainley, arriving just as Gainley's associates were about to leave in a taxi.
Haley, along with Patrolmen Rob Peachey and Rick Kassiotis and Chief James DiGianvittorio, responded to the motel. Police stopped the taxi and found the three were in possession of a laptop belonging to the correctional officers' union.
Police arrested Donny Rondon, 20, of Lynn, Kristen Bell, 27, of Lynn and a 14-year-old boy. All three are charged with receiving stolen property.
Police expect to add more charges to Gainley as the investigation continues.
Lynn police also assisted in the investigation.
