By Jonathan Phelps
It has always been Barbara and her daughter against the world. But she has always been able to find a way to keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs.
Several years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and although it was tough, she made it through. She uses most of her income to pay rent and is on a waiting list for low-income housing. From time to time, she needs assistance but rarely asks for help.
She is a survivor.
But six months ago, she received some bad news — her cancer is back and it doesn't look good. Since then, she has been regularly going to the Salvation Army for food assistance and to talk with caseworkers about her concerns and plans for staying healthy.
The Salvation Army will be there for Barbara and her daughter whatever happens.
Many people need help this year: those who are out of work, parents who are ill or have a sick child, or single parents struggling to pay rent, utilities and other necessities.
Hardships and just making ends meet may mean no extra money for gifts or a holiday meal.
The Salvation Army and the Salem News Holiday Fund work together to help those who need a little something extra to get their lives going again, especially around the holidays when families gather. Donations go a long way to help neighbors get going again.
