Husband's death leaves wife behind on the bills

Marla's husband, Ed, died unexpectedly and they had no life insurance.

She had very little savings, and the funeral expenses set her back.

She receives Social Security but is still struggling to pay her bills. She is waiting to start receiving her husband's pension, which should get her back on track. She has fallen behind on her electric bill and has received a shut-off notice.

A friend told her to go to the Salvation Army because many years ago she had been in a similar situation.

Marla took that advice, and the Salvation Army was able to assist her with a back payment on her electric bill, food from the food pantry and a chance to talk about the new challenges she faces without her husband.

Many people need help this year: those who are out of work, parents who are ill or have a sick child, or single parents struggling to pay rent, utilities and other necessities.

Hardships and just making ends meet may mean no extra money for gifts or a holiday meal.

The Salvation Army and the Salem News Holiday Fund work together to help those who need a little something extra to get their lives going again, especially around the holidays when families gather.

Donations go a long way to help neighbors get going again.
