Beverly police nab suspect in armed bank robbery

BEVERLY — A man suspected of robbing a bank at gunpoint this afternoon is now in custody, according to police.

The man, wielding a gray-colored handgun, made off with an undisclosed amount of money from Century Bank on Rantoul and Elliot streets. Police have recovered a mask and dark-colored sweatshirt the suspect worn during the robbery, said police spokeswoman April Clarizia. Bank tellers positively identified the man, she said, but police have not released his identity.

Police have not yet recovered the stolen money, the gun allegedly used in the robbery, or a backpack the suspect was carrying, Clariza said.

“It is still an active investigation; we’re still trying to retrace the steps,” Clariza said.
