PEABODY — A 75-year-old man was transported to Salem Hospital with significant injuries yesterday afternoon after he was struck outside his house by a vehicle that fled the scene, police say.
The victim, identified as William Story of 25 Roycroft Road, was washing his car outside his residence around noon when he went into the roadway for some reason and was struck from behind, Lt. Arthur Yeo said.
Story was alert and conscious when emergency personnel arrived at the scene but had sustained a large laceration to his head. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, and a Salem Hospital representative said he had already been discharged last night.
The vehicle that struck him — described as a green Maxima — was later located by police at the Motel 6 in Danvers, but the suspect had left that scene, too, apparently fleeing in a red 2008 Toyota Camry. A be-on-the-lookout alert was issued throughout the region, and the state police’s crime unit responded to process the vehicle.
Yeo said that police believe they know the identity of the driver and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
