Paroled man back in custody

SALEM — A man who just last month pleaded guilty to attacking his former girlfriend and her mother is back in custody, after showing up at the women’s Arbella Street home twice.

That, police say, was a violation of the criminal harassment order barring Daniel Taylor, 26, from going anywhere near the home.

And when his former girlfriend wouldn’t let him inside just before 6 a.m., Taylor allegedly made so much noise, yelling and banging on windows and a bulkhead door, that he woke up a neighbor, who called the police.

Taylor pleaded not guilty to two counts of violating the harassment order and a charge of disturbing the peace yesterday at his arraignment in Salem District Court, where his lawyer told a judge that the former girlfriend had been contacting Taylor in recent weeks and inviting him over when her mother wasn’t home.

Police were called to the home twice yesterday, the first time shortly before 2 a.m., when a neighbor heard yelling. Taylor allegedly fled after seeing police.

The second call, at 5:59 a.m., was also made by a neighbor, who told police that the yelling and banging she heard woke her up, prosecutor Heidi Sylvanowicz told a judge.

Sylvanowicz urged Judge Matthew Nestor to set bail at $5,000 cash, noting that on April 9 Taylor pleaded guilty to assaults on both the former girlfriend and her mother, after the girlfriend fled to her mother’s apartment to escape Taylor’s abuse. During that incident, Taylor had put his hands around the girlfriend’s throat.

During the sentencing hearing last month, the girlfriend accused Taylor of making an obscene gesture toward her as he was being led out of the courtroom.

Taylor was paroled from the committed portion of his 2 1/2 year jail term shortly after that hearing. The balance was suspended and he was supposed to be on probation for two years.
