Motorcyclist Medflighted after Hamilton crash

HAMILTON — A husband and wife were injured yesterday evening when the Harley Davidson they were riding on Route 1A veered into oncoming traffic and struck a car.

John McLaughlin Jr., 52, of Swampscott, and his wife Kathleen McLaughlin, 49, were transported to Beverly Hospital by Lyons Ambulance after the accident, said Sgt. Steve Trepanier. John was later flow by medical helicopter to an undisclosed Boston-area hospital.

Trepanier said John sustained “very serious” leg injuries, and that emergency personnel were concerned that either of the two could have sustained spinal injuries.

Police and the Fire Department received a report of the incident just after 6:30 p.m. Trepanier said the McLaughlins had been traveling southbound on Route 1A near Moulton Street when John McLaughlin lost control of the bike and it went into the northbound lane, striking an Audi belonging to an Ipswich woman who was traveling home from work.

Trepanier said the motorcycle struck the car so forcefully that the car’s air bags deployed.

The woman in the Audi was “shaken up” but uninjured, he said.

Both lanes of the road were closed for about forty minutes while crews cleared the scene.
