Police: Officer injured during pursuit

TOPSFIELD — Police say an officer was temporarily hospitalized after a car chase that began in Boxford yesterday afternoon ended in a violent confrontation with a suspect in a local cul-de-sac.

Michael Klein, 24, of West Wareham, was arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and additional motor vehicle offenses, according to a press release.

The incident began at about 1:35 p.m., when police in Topsfield received a report of an ongoing pursuit leading their way from Boxford, where officers said a driver had attempted to strike a police cruiser “head on.”

Sgt. Richard LeBel and Officer Shawn Frost attempted to deploy Stop Sticks — tire deflation devices — as Klein’s vehicle approached Washington Street, but they were unable to do so in time, said the release.

The vehicle continued onto Washington Street, turned onto Surrey Lane and ended up on Thompson Lane, a dead-end street, where officers blocked the suspect’s path.

“In an attempt to flee, the suspect crashed head-on into Sgt. LeBel’s SUV cruiser, causing extensive damage and air bag deployment,” wrote police.

Klein jumped out of his vehicle — which was so damaged by the collision that it was immovable — and started to run away from the scene, but LeBel was able to get out of his vehicle and apprehend the man.

Lebel was transported to Beverly Hospital and later released.

Klein was turned over to Boxford police for processing.
