The 2014 Best Chef Competition to benefit Beverly Bootstraps is Monday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at the Danversport Yacht Club, 161 Elliott St., Danvers. Chefs will compete for the title of Best Chef while cooking with food pantry ingredients. Participating chefs will be Jake DiSilva of Latitude 43 in Gloucester, Chris Tighe of Salt Kitchen and Rum Bar in Ipswich, Patrick Shea of The Barrel House American Bar in Beverly and Anthony Marino of Marino’s Cafe in Beverly. Guests may also enjoy a Taste of the North Shore at sampling stations of more than 20 local restaurants and decide the People’s Choice Award in both the Savory and Sweet categories. The event includes a new raffle, cash bar, live auction and food drive. Raffle tickets are available for purchase at the event or at www.beverlybootstraps.org for $25 each or $50 for three. Attendees are encouraged to bring a food item to donate to the Beverly Bootstraps food pantry. The event benefits the food assistance, client support, adult education, and youth and family programs at Beverly Bootstraps. Tickets cost $50 per person and can be purchased at BeverlyBootstraps.org or 978-927-1561; advance purchase suggested, as previous years have sold out.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary presents an eight-lesson Boating Skills and Seamanship Course beginning Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. and continuing on consecutive Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 5 Conant St., Danvers. The cost is $75 per person, and graduating students will receive a certificate, which may reduce boat insurance costs. Preregistration is required and can be done by contacting Brian R. North Shore Community Development Coalition and Salem State University have partnered to present a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to provide income tax preparation to low-income taxpayers throughout the region. This year, SSU’s business school students will volunteer at North Shore CDC, 102 Lafayette St., Salem, to prepare income taxes for low-income taxpayers. Appointments are available through April 11 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Fridays from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. North Shore CDC is an IRS-sponsored site.
