Police probe Peabody armed robbery

PEABODY — Police have released more details about the armed robbery at Town Variety on Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the store at 116 Central St. after receiving a report at 9:22 p.m. that it had been robbed at gunpoint, according to the incident log.

The suspect was described as a male in a black hooded jacket and gray sweatpants with a mask covering his face up to his nose. He reportedly had a blue drawstring bag or backpack and showed a handgun during the incident.

The suspect was last seen traveling on foot on Central Street toward Peabody Square, possibly with another male. Detectives found somebody who matched his description but determined he was “younger than suspect description.”

“Detectives sent him on his way,” police wrote.

Later, police spoke with a man on Wallis Street who said that about 9:30 p.m., he’d been approached by a clean-shaven male in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall. The male had a dark jacket, a knit hat and a dark-colored backpack.

“Asked if he saw any police in the area,” police wrote.
