Police: Dropped cigarette caused crashes in Salem

SALEM — Police say a motorist from Beverly crashed into a parked car on Loring Avenue yesterday after he dropped a lit cigarette in his lap, then swerved across the road and struck another car.

The man — Ardit Bego, 22 — was uninjured in the crash, which occurred as he was traveling on the street in his 1998 Volvo S70 about 12:30 p.m., according to the incident log.

After dropping the cigarette, Bego crashed into the back of 2011 Toyota Scion that was parked on the same side of the street as he’d been traveling, damaging its rear section, according to police. Police say he then “swerved across two lanes of traffic, crossing a double solid line” and struck a parked 2001 Toyota Rav4, damaging its driver’s side and front.

An officer cited Bego for speeding, a marked lanes violation and impeded operation.

Bego’s Volvo sustained damage to its front end, and the vehicle’s air bag deployed.

All three vehicles were towed.
