---- — SALEM — Police say slippery roads were to blame for a number of accidents yesterday.

The first accident occurred about 11:30 a.m., when a motorist in a Ford Taurus was unable to stop at the intersection of Canal and Gardner streets and slid into a Toyota Highlander that had been traveling straight on Canal Street, according to the incident log. There were no injuries and no tows.

Shortly before 1 p.m., police responded to a report of an accident at Lafayette and Cedar streets and determined that a Chevrolet truck had collided with a Honda Civic at the intersection after “both had trouble stopping.” Police wrote that “both streets were slippery due to weather.” Again, there were no injuries and no tows necessary.

Next, about 3:30 p.m., a motorist traveling outbound on Liberty hill Avenue lost control “due to snow-covered roads” and stuck a chain-link fence at Greenlawn Cemetery. Police reported that he was uninjured, though the vehicle was later towed.

Police fielded multiple reports of icy roadways all over the city well into yesterday evening, according to radio reports.
