Worker hurt in forklift accident

PEABODY — A Haverhill man was in fair condition last night at Salem Hospital, after being trapped between two forklifts yesterday at his workplace on Wallis Street.

Stephen Kulik, 54, suffered a broken leg in the accident, which occurred in the parking lot of Travel Leather, 39 Wallis St. He was freed by co-workers at Travel Leather and the Peabody Fire Department.

"He was pretty much free by the time we got there, but we had to do a lot of moving around to get him on the gurney," said Tom Wynne, a Peabody firefighter who responded to the accident. The accident "twisted him up and broke his lower leg right around the ankle. ... I don't know how it happened, but he was hurting."

He was brought to Salem Hospital by ambulance just after 10 a.m.

It was unclear yesterday how Kulik became pinned between the vehicles, Deputy fire Chief Paul Hinchion said.

The owner of Travel Leather could not be reached for comment.
