A man ran a car into a sign in front of Bruce McCorry's Martial Arts Academy on Newbury Street at 3:42 p.m. so hard that it caused the large sign to sway violently back and forth. The sedan the man was driving also struck a white van that was parked in front of the sign, badly damaging the van's front end.

A resident was able to extinguish a stove fire on Rockdale Park before authorities arrived at 6:29 p.m.

A bicycle was reported stolen at 9 p.m. on Lowe Street.

Thursday

Michael R. Gillis, 27, of 27 Wentworth Road, Melrose, was arrested and charged with drunken driving and a marked lanes violation at 12:44 a.m. on Newbury and Lake streets.

Kevin Reis, 33, of 36 Dartmouth St., Apt. 304, Malden, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license, a brakes violation, failure to stop or yield, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating an uninsured motor vehicle at 1:22 a.m. near Newbury and Lake streets.

Police helped fix a problem with an "unruly passenger" on a train near Essex Street and Parramatta Road at 5:55 p.m.

Salem

Wednesday

Hertz called police because of a returned Dodge Avenger with "extensive driver's-side damage." Police will speak with the person who last rented the car. The damage was reported on Canal Street at 4:27 p.m.

A woman will be summonsed to court for being involved in two hit-and-run accidents, the latest of which occurred on Highland Avenue at 4:44 p.m.

A larceny was reported at a building on Prince Street at 6:38 p.m.

When police arrived, they could not locate the cars that were reportedly racing near Orchard Street at 8:02 p.m.

Dave A. Bernard, 50, of 13 Jackson Terrace, Salem, was arrested and charged with assault and battery and attempted murder at 11:09 p.m. on Loring Avenue after police responded to a fight in the area. Police cited strangulation as the reason for the attempted-murder charge.

Thursday

There were "fresh pry marks" on the door of a Porter Street apartment that had been broken into at some point over the previous night. The incident was reported by the apartment's occupant at 10:32 a.m. A number of items were reported missing.

A $4,200 gold and diamond ring was reported stolen from a Hancock Street apartment at 10:51 a.m.

William H. O'Donnell, 23, of 23 Sparhawk Road, Lynn, was arrested and charged with being a disorderly person at 1:50 p.m. on Lafayette Street.

A motorcyclist was reportedly involved in an accident at 6:19 p.m. on Ocean Avenue.

Danvers

Wednesday

The Ira Lexus dealership told police that one of its dealer plates had been stolen at 5:49 p.m. on Andover Street.

Two woman were accused of shoplifting from Kohl's on Independence Way at 7:59 p.m.

Maryanne Loughlin, 53, of 13 Mildred Road, Danvers, was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery and resisting arrest at 11:14 p.m. at her address.

Thursday

Jewelry was reported stolen from a Dyer Court address at 1:45 p.m.
