MARBLEHEAD — A Marblehead man accused of taking compromising photos of a female friend, then posting them on a phony Facebook page, has now been indicted on an even more serious charge of rape.
Reid Jones, 41, was first arrested last year in the case. Now, his charges have been presented to a grand jury, and on Wednesday he was indicted on charges of rape, indecent assault and battery, identity fraud, and photographing a person in the nude without consent.
Prosecutors and police reports say Jones and the woman knew each other — the woman said they were just friends — and that at one point during that friendship, she fell asleep while she was alone with him.
Sometime after that, after the woman told Jones she didn't want to spend any more time with him, Jones created a phony Facebook page using her personal information and the photos that he had taken, prosecutors said.
Another friend of the woman alerted her to the forged Facebook profile, and the woman went to police.
As the investigation continued, police discovered additional evidence that led to the charge of digital rape.
Jones remains free on bail in the case.
His lawyer, William Korman, said his client "acknowledges that setting up the Facebook page was a mistake," but denies the other allegations against him.
Jones still has a profile on the dating website "Plenty of Fish," where he describes himself as "open minded, honest, crazy and creative" and goes on to say he's "willing to try anything" and "the kinkiest things I've done are sex in public and threesomes."
Korman said he believes the profile was created prior to Jones' arrest last year.
Jones is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 2.
