HAMILTON — A 24-year-old Gordon-Conwell seminary student was arrested Saturday on charges of secretly videotaping another student in her dorm room.
Daniel G. Richards was arraigned yesterday at Ipswich District Court in Newburyport on charges of breaking and entering in the daytime and unlawfully and secretly videotaping another person.
Police listed an address for Richards at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary at 130 Essex St., but school officials said he was suspended Sunday.
Richards "vacated the dorms and will not be allowed back," said Michael Colaneri, the seminary's spokesman.
On July 29, Colaneri said the student reported to seminary campus safety personnel that her dorm room was broken into and "her personal privacy compromised."
Campus safety notified Hamilton police and Officer Karen Wallace responded to the scene.
Wallace learned that the victim found a video-recording device in her room.
Following an investigation by Hamilton police, Detective Ken Nagy applied for, and was granted, a search warrant for Richards' car and dorm room, according to Hamilton police.
Richards, who was entering his second year, lived in a different dormitory on campus.
The seminary has single sex dormitories.
"Following the July incident, the campus safety department increased patrols of the dorm rooms," Colaneri said. "In addition, the entire campus community was alerted through e-mail and Web communication, and timely notices were posted throughout the campus. At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident."
