BEVERLY — A former Beverly Hospital vice president charged with stealing more than $500,000 in a bribery and kickback scheme while overseeing a renovation and expansion of the hospital is set to stand trial in November.
Paul Galzerano, 59, was in Salem Superior Court yesterday with his attorney to choose a trial date.
Unlike his three co-defendants — contractors who admitted performing work at Galzerano's former Groveland home and paying his personal bills with money paid to them by the hospital from project funds — Galzerano was apparently unwilling to try to resolve the case with a plea agreement.
He faces three counts of bribing a business and four counts of felony larceny, including charges stemming from the theft of antiques from the hospital, which were later found in Galzerano's home, prosecutors said.
The trial will get under way Nov. 9, though a location has not yet been selected. Typically, that process takes place in the week prior to the trial date and is based on which court sessions are available the following week in Salem, Lawrence or Newburyport.
Assistant Attorney General Margaret Parks told Judge John Lu that the trial is expected to take more than a week.
Galzerano will be back in court Oct. 14 for a final pretrial hearing in the case.
In May, Galzerano and his lawyer, Scott Gleason, tried unsuccessfully to have evidence in the case tossed, claiming that a Groveland officer lied to get a search warrant. That claim was rejected by a Salem Superior Court judge.
