HAMILTON — An 87-year-old man crashed his vehicle into two Railroad Avenue buildings around noon yesterday.
The driver, Raymond Poor of Wenham, was the only person involved in the accident, and he refused medical treatment, fire Lt. Raymond Brunet said. The vehicle "bounced off" one building and drove into a second in the vicinity of 65 Railroad Ave., he said.
"He got confused (while) he was backing up," Brunet said. "Thank God no one was walking by because that could have been a serious issue. ... It definitely could have been a lot worse. It's a heavily traveled area."
Home to the post office, a bank, numerous restaurants, offices and shops, the downtown street is usually busy during the lunch hour, Brunet said.
The 911 call reporting the crash came in just after noon.
Brunet estimated the damage to the man's car was $5,000 or $6,000, while the two buildings had minor exterior damage.
Emergency responders checked gas lines in the area, and a building inspector responded to the accident scene. The vehicle was towed away.
As of yesterday afternoon, the driver had not been charged with anything. Brunet said he was not sure if the man was later transported to a hospital or not.
