Man accused of Peabody ATM robbery turns self in

A man accused of robbing a woman at a Bank of America ATM yesterday turned himself into police this afternoon.

Gerald Russo, 33, of 116 Foster St., Apt. 3, Peabody, has been arrested and charged with unarmed robbery and breaking and entering a motor vehicle in the daytime for a felony.

Russo surrendered himself to Peabody Police "without incident" just after noon today, police said.

According to police, he jumped into a woman's car as she pulled up to an outside, drive-through ATM and demanded she take out extra money. The incident took place around 11:20 a.m. Monday at the Bank of America branch office at 189 Andover St. (Route 114), across from the entrance to Northshore Mall.

Peabody Police said today the alleged victim is 35, not 67 as they originally reported.

Police flooded the area after the incident and conducted an extensive search for a suspect. The woman told police she was robbed of $200. No weapon was shown, police said, and no injuries were reported.

Russo is scheduled to be arraigned at Peabody District Court this afternoon.
