Police: Beverly man sent cop child porn

BEVERLY — The president of the Beverly Cove Improvement Association has been arrested and charged with sending child pornography to what turned out to be an undercover law enforcement officer last month.

Christopher Shimkin, 47, of 6 Seward Ave., Beverly, pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing and disseminating child pornography during his arraignment yesterday afternoon.

His attorney said Shimkin’s father was expected to post Shimkin’s $100,000 bail by last night. Once released, he’ll be required to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet, surrender his passport, have no unsupervised contact with children under 16, stay away from the Cove Community Center, and refrain from using a computer or smartphone, conditions set by Salem District Court Judge Matthew Machera.

Beverly police were contacted last week by investigators from an FBI Violent Crimes Task Force working in Franklin County, Ohio, prosecutor Anna Zalewski told the judge.

Ohio police officer Brett Peachey was visiting chat rooms on a site popular with pedophiles, including chat rooms called “incest” and “jailbait.” That’s where the officer encountered “Misto17,” who purported to be the father of a 6-year-old girl, with whom, he claimed, he was having sexual relations, according to a report by Beverly police Sgt. David Richardson.

The chat then moved onto a Yahoo site, where “Misto17” sent 15 images to the undercover officer, including 10 that depicted pre-pubescent children, Zalewski told the judge.

Shimkin allegedly continued chatting over the next several weeks with the undercover officer, revealing that his first name was Chris and sending a photo of himself.

Investigators identified Shimkin through his IP address.

Last weekend Beverly police received a package containing copies of what was sent to Ohio, along with other information.

Police spoke to Shimkin before his arrest, and say he admitted sending the photos, Zalewski told the judge.

Police indicated in their report that they are still working to confirm whether Shimkin has a child. His attorney, Mark Barry, said yesterday that Shimkin does not have children.
