Motorcyclist eludes Salem police

SALEM — Police were unable to catch a motorcyclist who was seen driving through sign signs and speeding with his lights off in the area of Bridge Street on Sunday night.

The incident began when an officer on patrol on Boston Street about 9:52 p.m. heard a motorcycle coming down Bridge Street at a high rate of speed, according to the log. The officer began following the dark-colored bike and watched as it went through a stop sign on Proctor Street and again at the intersection of Colby Street and Highland Avenue.

The officer pulled the motorcycle over on Highland Avenue, but the man operating it “turned around twice and looked at this officer” and then sped off when the officer exited the police vehicle.

“This officer could not keep up with the motorcycle because of his high rate of speed and his driving in and out of traffic with his lights off,” wrote police.

A computer check on the plate determined that the operator — positively identified by the officer — was a man out of Malden. The plate itself had been canceled.

Police will request the court issue a summons for the man with charges of speeding, failure to stop for a police officer, operating to endanger, operating an unregistered motorcycle and a stop sign violation.

The motorcycle was last seen headed in the direction of Lynn.
