Man who couldn’t hold it in Danvers is held

DANVERS — A man police say was fleeing the scene of a rear-end collision on Maple Street New Year’s Day apparently hoped that a friend who lived nearby would let him hide in his house.

But when Domenic Difabio’s friend opened the door, Difabio was relieving himself on the front porch, said Danvers police Sgt. David Joyce. The friend refused to let Difabio in.

He ran into some nearby woods instead, where police quickly caught up with the 51-year-old Lynn man and arrested him shortly after 1 p.m. on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, driving after license suspension and indecent exposure.

Joyce said Difabio had crashed his Ford pickup into the rear of a Ford Explorer on Maple Street, then ran from the scene to the friend’s home.

After police caught up with him in the woods, he struggled with them, at one point breaking free, only to fall to the ground.

Defense attorney Tom Gately urged the judge to release Difabio, saying his client helps support his family and is needed at home. He also said Difabio suffers from serious health problems.

Joyce asked Judge Christopher LoConto to set bail for Difabio, noting his record.

Probation officers also asked the judge to keep him in custody pending a probation violation hearing, because in addition to the new charges, Difabio had failed to report to his probation officer and had stopped attending a counseling program for men who beat women.

The judge, noting “defaults all over his record,” agreed to the request for detention until the probation violation hearing, but did not set bail in the new case.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 27.
