Dunn takes Gloucester finance post

GLOUCESTER — Mayor Carolyn Kirk has tapped John Dunn, the former director of municipal finance for Beverly, to fill the shoes of outgoing chief financial officer Jeff Towne who is accepting a position in Natick.

Kirk said Dunn came highly recommended by Beverly Mayor Bill Scanlon, and as Beverly Mayor-elect Mike Cahill brings in his own team, Dunn was free to take the Gloucester job.

“Bill Scanlon spoke very highly of (Dunn),” Kirk said.

She said the city received about 30 resumes for the post, but few of them had municipal experience.

“He was by far and away the best candidate,” the mayor said of Dunn.

Kirk said she has temporarily approved Dunn for the job while waiting to see if he gets City Council approval. He starting salary will be approximately $110,000 annually; Towne’s ending salary was $117,000.
