Police received a 4:08 p.m. report that a suspicious man was in a yard at 22 Story Ave., but they were unable to locate him.

Police received a 4:51 p.m. report of a possible assault at 119 Essex St. Subsequently arrested in Saugus was Jefferson Leo Purcell, 46, of the same address, on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and battery, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon. Officer Mike Boccuzzi said Purcell had tried to strangle a woman with an electrical cord during a dispute, and that the woman had reported the incident from Salem Hospital.


A woman reported at 12:57 a.m. that her purse had been stolen from her vehicle at 22 Thorndike St.

A 2:25 a.m. report that somebody had heard arguing in a downstairs apartment brought police to 11 Whitney Ave. Police wrote later: “No arguing and no answer at the door, only a dog barking.”

Somebody at 224 Beaver Pond reported at 3:38 a.m. that he or she believed somebody was in the house. “Door blown open,” police wrote later. “All OK.”

Police responded to Water Street and Silver Court after a 6:01 a.m. report of a suspicious truck. “Fisherman looking at conditions to see if he would go out today,” police wrote later.

Police received a 1:40 p.m. report that people were possibly smoking marijuana at 17 Conant St. Police wrote later: “One joint confiscated and destroyed.”



Police responded to 86 Andover St. after a 2:13 p.m. report of suspicious activity and determined a man had punched his vehicle after it broke down, injuring his hand. He declined medical transport.

Police responded to 19 Raymond Circle at 4:59 p.m. on a report that the caller’s beer pong table was recently stolen from his shed.

Police were called to a Victoria’s Secret at Northshore Mall on Andover Street at 5:53 p.m. where three women caused a disturbance while “possibly trying to return merchandise,” the log said. The caller stated the three women knocked over several displays and became belligerent. Mall security reported they followed the three females to their vehicle, which then “fled the area toward Container Store.”
