New officers all lifelong 'Headers

MARBLEHEAD — Marblehead’s three new full-time police officers are all lifelong Marblehead residents, Chief Robert Picariello said.

Neil Comeau, Christopher Donahue and Mike Maccario were appointed unanimously by selectmen Wednesday night, based on Picariello’s recommendation. The chief said they passed background checks, physical and mental health exams, agility testing and interviews. Two of them still need to be trained at the state police academy.

The new officers will replace officers who have retired, been promoted or transferred to other departments. Picariello said he hopes to hire another officer in the new fiscal year, which starts in July.

Donahue’s and Maccario’s appointments will be effective March 10 when the police academy begins, Picariello said. The academy is five months long and includes three months of field training.

Donahue graduated from Marblehead High in 2009 and joined the Marine Corps in 2010 as a reservist. He served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011.

Maccario attended Marblehead High from 2005 to 2007 before transferring to St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, “which we won’t hold against him,” Picariello said. He graduated in 2009. He is certified as a part-time officer in Hampton, N.H., and has worked as an auxiliary officer in Winthrop.

Comeau graduated from Marblehead High in 2000 and Arizona State University in 2006. He graduated from the Lowell police academy, which means he can start this month.

“We have no need to send him again, which is a tremendous bonus for us,” Picariello said. “He is currently employed as a police officer for Salem State University.”
