Going green

The new four-story Beverly High School building includes the following "green" features:

40-kilowatt solar panel system on roof

"Cool" roof membrane that lowers operating temperatures of mechanical equipment and reflects sun

Plumbing fixtures that decrease water consumption by more than 30 percent

Heating and air-conditioning system that sets temperature based on when rooms are occupied

Lighting fixtures that decrease wattage by 40 percent when natural lighting is present

Reflective soffits and skylights for "daylight harvesting"

Use of low-emitting paints, carpeting, tiles and adhesives to increase indoor air quality

Exterior window shades on all eastern and southern facades to decrease "heat island" effect

Installation of Energy Star-rated appliances and equipment

Athletic fields that include organic soil content and irrigation devices that save money by using soil moisture meters
