Long weekend is last chance to catch this year's fair

The list of things to do at the Topsfield Fair stretches through the weekend into Columbus Day. Here are three events you can check out.

Uncle Kracker

What's a country fair without country music? Detroit-area native and former Kid Rock turntable man Uncle Kracker has a new album, "Happy Hour," with a strong country influence. He will perform at the grandstand tonight at 7 in a free concert. Uncle Kracker, who has recorded songs and toured with country star Kenny Chesney, has explored all kinds of music in his career, blending rap, rock, country and soul in a unique style.

Knife throwers

This husband-and-wife knife-throwing team bills itself as "One Sharp Marriage." That's because Mike and Rosa Gross demonstrate how trust, love and friendship can survive, no matter what fate (or a spouse) throws your way. They live in Western Massachusetts and were voted "Outstanding New Performers of The Year" for 2008 by the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame in Texas.

The Grosses will be on the Trianon Stage on Monday at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.

Dog days

Man's best friend will be up to all his tricks this weekend at the fair. Peterson's Working Border Collies will demonstrate how they herd geese and sheep on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m., Sunday at 1, 4 and 5 p.m., and Monday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Essex County Farmyard.

Also, at the same location, the state police K-9 unit will show how they sniff out crime on Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday at noon and 2 p.m.

If your dog loves to chase things — and what dog doesn't? — he or she may be a Dock Dog. These canines will compete by running off a dock and diving for things in the water, all day Saturday to Monday, Oct. 9 to 11 at the grandstand. Contestants will be judged for the farthest jump, the fastest retrieval of a floating object, and in the height of their jumps for a suspended bumper.

Dock Dog events are open to all dogs 6 months or older, with handlers older than 7 years. Participants should register in advance at the fair website, www.topsfieldfair.org, click on "grandstand" and bring their dog to the Maple Street gate.
