Letter: On quality of life in Salem

To the editor:

This is in reference to Anthony Salvo’s recent letter on the senior center site (”Senior center should be in Willows,” May 9).

I am one of those who have lived in Salem more than 40 years. Though born at the old JB Thomas Hospital, I was raised on Memorial Drive and after a few adult years in nearby cities, moved back to my childhood home. It’s a beautiful area and I know how fortunate I am to live in this particular neighborhood.

Now, with that said, let me tell you “the rest of the story.” Let me tell you about the many times I can’t get to my home after a night at work due to the many road races held in this area. The streets are blocked, people block the driveway and I’ve had the Salem police tell me to “just wait, it’ll only be another hour or so.” They tailgate, cheer, walk on the grass and flowers. Soon a very popular walk will overtake the area and my freedom to come and go as I please from my own home will be on hold.

Tony Salvo mentioned the Memorial Drive site would be best for the new senior center. He mentioned plenty of parking — where, along Memorial Drive? Will this parking also be metered? I know everywhere I go in this city there are signs telling me “Resident Parking Only.” Will Memorial Drive residents now qualify for this amenity? Once this site is built on, how lovely is it then? Has he ever noticed the people enjoying this view during a family outing?

This area already supports heavy traffic in nice weather, road races, motorcycle noise, sewer and power plants and is also deemed perfect for a large unsightly wind turbine.

Mr. Salvo argues that the Boston/Bridge Street site is a perpetual poison due to past uses. It’s a killer! Where does he think many of the over-80 crowd worked in this city? If this site is still so dangerous after clean-up, will it ever be developed?

There area many quality-of-life issues in Salem. The quality of roads and travel and the quality of representation by councilors, to name only two. You see, two are all I have time for as I must get the recycling out.
