Fishman enters Beverly council race

---- — BEVERLY — The first open race in two decades has drawn three candidates for the Ward 1 City Council seat, including a former congressional candidate.

Daniel Fishman, Susan Woods Powell and Brian Williams have taken out nomination papers for Ward 1, where Maureen Troubetaris has served for the last 22 years.

Troubetaris announced in March that she will not run for re-election, creating a wide-open race for her successor on the nine-member City Council.

Fishman took out papers on Thursday, introducing to the race a candidate who made a name for himself by challenging Congressman John Tierney last year. Running as a Libertarian, Fishman finished third in the primary behind Tierney and Republican Richard Tisei.

Earlier this year he announced that he would run for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, but later changed his mind.

Fishman, a software engineer who lives on Colgate Road, said a competitive race should be good for the ward and the city.

“I think the city benefits from having a discussion with as many voices as possible,” he said. “In this case whoever gets elected is going to be an amalgam of all the people running and contributing to the conversation.”

Powell, who lives on Bridge Street, grew up in Ryal Side and owns the Ryal Side Cafe.

“I’ve never been a politician, but I often hear the concerns of my neighbors when they come into the Ryal Side Cafe,” she said. “I would like to be their voice and represent these hard-working people in my neighborhood.”

Williams is a Winthrop Avenue resident who owns a catering business. He could not be reached for comment.

Candidates have until Aug. 2 to take out nomination papers. They must be returned to City Hall with 100 signatures by Aug. 20.

The preliminary election is Sept. 24, and the final election is Nov. 5.
