Drunken driver arrested at fatal crash scene

PEABODY — Police say a Lynn man was arrested on a drunken driving charge yesterday morning after he tried to drive through a section of Walnut Street that had been cordoned off because of a fatal crash about an hour before.

Michael A. Hope, 49, of 45 Columbia Ave., Lynn, was arrested on charges of drunken driving and possession of a class B drug.

According to the incident log, Hope was traveling in his 2012 Nissan Maxima at Walnut and Tracey streets when police pulled him over at 1:42 a.m.

Lt. Arthur Yeo said Hope “drove through barriers” that police had erected at the scene of the crash that killed Daniel Walker, a 31-year-old Peabody man. That accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m.

Hope’s vehicle was towed after the incident.
