Suspect in sex abuse dies at hospital

BOSTON (AP) — A Wakefield man charged with sexually abusing 13 children while working for his wife’s child care business has died after being taken from jail to a hospital several hours earlier.

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office said John Burbine died last night.

Burbine’s lawyer told news outlets earlier yesterday it appeared Burbine tried to hang himself in his cell.

The Middlesex sheriff says guards making morning rounds found Burbine at 8 a.m. yesterday in his cell “in need of emergency medical attention.”

Prosecutors allege that between August 2010 and August 2012, Burbine molested children ranging from 8 days to 31/2 years old through his wife’s unlicensed business.

He had pleaded not guilty and was being held on $1 million bail.

Burbine was already a convicted sex offender when charged in 2012.

Burbine was previously an adjunct professor at North Shore Community College, where he taught computer classes until October 2012.
