Police probe Market Basket reports

SALEM — Police responded to Market Basket on Highland Avenue numerous times yesterday afternoon following reports of larceny, shoplifting and a counterfeit bill.

The first incident was reported at 1:24 p.m., when a vendor told police his coat had been stolen while he was restocking the shelves at the grocery store about 10:30 a.m., according to the incident log.

The man said he’d hung the coat at the end of the snack aisle, but when he returned from throwing away trash, it had disappeared.

“He did walk the store searching for it but was not able to locate it,” police wrote. “It also had not been turned in to guest services.”

An officer later obtained photos from the store that showed a male and a female walking out with the man’s coat in their carriage; the investigation is ongoing.

Next, at 2 p.m., police responded to Market Basket after a report that a man had tried to pass a counterfeit $10 bill.

An officer spoke to the man, who said “he resides with a group of people, and they all put in money to pay for groceries, and it came from one of his roommates, but he did not know which one it was,” police wrote.

The officer confiscated the note.

Police were called back to the store about 3:30 p.m. A manager said he watched a woman duck into Aisle 9 and then take items from her carriage and put them in her purse.

“She then checked out the items in the rest of her carriage and tried to leave the store, where she was stopped,” police wrote.

Subsequently arrested was Donna R. Beatrice, 60, of 12 Intervale Road, Marblehead, on a charge of shoplifting by concealing merchandise.
