Dog walker hit by car

BEVERLY — A female pedestrian was hospitalized Tuesday after being struck by a car operated by a man who was charged with drunken driving.

The unidentified 24-year-old woman was walking two dogs, police said, when she was hit at 5:21 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue.

Police officer Eric Abrahamson and several firefighters came to her aid until an ambulance arrived. She was bleeding from the head and hands, police said.

The driver, Walter Orechia, 51, of 18 Kingdom Terrace, Peabody, was charged with drunken driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and an open container violation.

Orechia said he had not been drinking and told police the woman ran in front of his car.

Police found a number of beer cans and grape Smirnoff vodka nips in the vehicle, including two in the center console. Police also said they smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath.

The condition of the pedestrian is not known.

The two dogs returned home, police said.
