Thief runs off with $1,000

BEVERLY — Police are searching for a man who allegedly snatched an envelope with $1,000 from an unlocked car yesterday afternoon.

The victim, a Beverly resident, told police that both the cash and a white iPhone were stolen from his car about 2 p.m. when it was parked at Wallis and Park streets. The man said his car was not locked, and he said the theft was witnessed by several co-workers.

The workers described the thief as a thin white male who was about 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing a blue sweatshirt with a white hood, according to police.

The co-workers told police that they confronted the man, who initially told them he was a friend of the owner of the car. Then, the man handed over several credit cards before running off with the envelope full of cash.

Police said there is a suspect in the case.
